On Traveling – Education

There are many quotes on traveling – a simple Google search gives numerous websites to choose and quote from. However, there is an underlying message in almost all the pondering; to travel is to get educated in mind and thought.

Traveling is a different style of education, one that can never be gleaned from books or from long classroom lectures – it is the type of learning that comes from being in unfamiliar surroundings and suddenly discovering familiarity, to be alone in an unknown place and suddenly making a lifelong friend (Facebook helps to stay connected), from not knowing anything to suddenly finding understanding – for sure, to travel is to learn. It is to shed one’s long held prejudices and learn the essential fact that we are all the same (sometimes uncomfortably so), it is to see in action what we only read in books, it is to believe the unbelievable and experience the unimaginable – it’s an on-site, on-spot teaching, it’s applying the theories in a lab that is the World.

Traveling gives wings to our imagination, brings lightness to our hearts, knowledge to our brains and contentment to our souls.

“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines, sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.” ~ Mark Twain (1835-1910)
